I bought this book for my son's sixth birthday, uncertain of its message, but hopeful that it had something to do with growing up, and finding God's purpose for your life. It's all in the title-a young acorn, afraid to leave its "mother" tree, goes on a series of adventures until it finally matures enough to become a constant and reliable companion for a young girl, who is also searching for her purpose.Throughout the book, this tree compares himself to those around him-the orange trees, who grow faster and bear fruit. The flowering plants, whose yield is plentiful and more immediately gratifying. He is frustrated by how slowly he grows, by how unremarkable he seems to be, not realizing that it is he who will become the biggest, the strongest, and the greatest of them all. This message was exactly what I wanted to get across to my son. It is so easy for children to get caught up in comparing their accomplishments to others, especially if they mature much more slowly than their peers, or in my case, their siblings. I have children on both ends, and this book can speak to both of them.I was able to read this to a 3 and 6 year old, but it was a bit too long for my three year old, who had run off to grab another book 3/4 of the way through. Also, if you become emotional when you read "love you forever", this book will probably make you cry. I'm not overly emotional, but I couldn't help myself in the end, as I saw the message come full circle. The analogy isn't completely logical, but it works for a child, and I have been able to use it for both of my children throughout the week as their various frustrations come up.4 stars for the length, but with a little editing, it could easily be a five star book (I'm not sure the story line with the orange grove is necessary).

Excellent Message. Want to be clear that the point of the story is so good and relevant for all ages. 3 stars because story is lengthy which is fine but struggled (only slightly) to hold the attention of 3 & 6 yr old. Held their attention for first read through but not necessarily one that would be requested again and again. Better for older reader reader but not one they would necessarily pick up on their own to read.

Author knows for metaphorical books to teach character and to connect with the child. Sometimes those metaphors are completely missed if the child is not old enough to understand the metaphors and even when explained they don’t get it then they are too young for the book. It’s a picture book with a cute story and concept, but my 6 year old ( very smart and understands things like an expression and some metaphors after explained) has not completely grasped this metaphore after reading a few times. It’s a cute story and she will eventually so we kept it and have many of this authors books since they are written well, teach great concepts and they will even learn more about writing styles and metaphors as they continue to be exposed to them.

Physical book was sub-standard: I received this book quickly but was initially disappointed with the quality the book arrived in. Pages were not cut properly and were still stuck together. Some of the pages were folded and ran through the length of the page. My son didn’t mind the imperfections or seem to notice them, so I didn’t return the book.Story: The actual story is very cute and has a great message for everyone, young and old. It’s a little bit lengthy for a children’s bedtime story. It usually takes my son, 5 years old, and I at least 30 minutes to read. He enjoys reading the book with me and I enjoy our story time with this book. It’s a meaningful, inspiring, and encouraging story.

This is one of my 4yr old's favorite book. We started reading it wen he was 3yrs old.The first time my husband read it to him, he, my husband, got teary eyed. He didn't know what the book was about when he read it to him and he was caught by surprised; got him thinking about our son growing up.So yes, This book, made a grown man cry. LOL

I love this book. I love it for what it is, and I love it for how it speaks to me.I am now approaching age 60, and perhaps now I can understand what it means better than I ever could as a child. Perhaps in 20 years I will understand it even better. It is a story that grows with you.The acorn is called by his/her mother to "Just be the tree God made you to be."As a child I wanted to be lots of things. I wanted to be safe, but time and situations carried me from my safe zone. As a young adult I wanted to be all of the things that my friends were, and discovered that I didn't have their skills I had my own. Later I would begin to discover my own skills and talents. At age 50, I would finally return to college to complete my MDiv.I served one church, and am now serving three small churches. As I grow older, God expands my understanding of the ways that I can be the oak God calls me to be. As I grow older, I constantly find new ways to be me.This book makes an excellent gift for new parents, but it is just as appropriate for young teens wondering about their future.

Inside the tiny acorn, is a great oak just waiting to grow. The little acorn didn't realize his potential, but his mother oak did. She reassured him that he can be a great oak tree of his own one day, and he did. He grew taller than the orange tree and the roses in the garden. He grew so large and strong, that one day his huge branches were able to hold a swing for a little girl. He watched her grow and become older until one day she no longer played on the swing. She sulked below its branches, needing a lesson about her own potential. Max Lucado brings the story of great potential into the hands of children. Beautiful illustrations and a powerfully written story really work to catch a child's imagination. A great read for children 5 and older!

I thought it might be too advanced for my kindergartener, but he enjoyed it and understood the point. A really cute story- simply written but powerful message.

How to Be Happy (Or at Least Less Sad): A Creative Workbook, by Lee Crutchley

Review

"This book made me nervous when I first scanned through it because I knew it would work! This isn't a self-help book; it's more of a blue-collar, get-down-to-business friend with calloused hands who is ready to boogie when you are. This book is about action, but also acknowledgment. There are no platitudes and its author is no Pollyanna. It's an explicit map that leads to a place where you're going to feel measurably better, and better equipped to face life's vicissitudes."— Rob Delaney, comedian"This book does the work that I believe is most worthwhile – it does not hand you answers, it sets you up to find them yourself. One of the most accessible, relatable, unique and flawlessly crafted books that I have ever seen. A must have, a must read, a must do."— Brianna Wiest, author of The Human Element"Taking the small incremental steps toward conquering depression takes courage, and even then, it helps to have any compassionate guidance you can find. How To Be Happy (Or At Least Less Sad) comes from a knowing, forgiving place. Its intentions are sincere. When I first read it I thought: I could have used a book like this. And then I thought: I still can use a book like this."— Jason Porter, author of Why Are You So Sad?"This book (How To Be Happy) is the kind of friend I want around when I'm feeling sad. He lets me vent without judging me, gives me a little guidance, reminds me that I'm not alone, and lets me draw all over him with colored pencils."— Lisa Currie, author of The Scribble Diary and Me, You, Us“Whether you are just having a random sad day, or whether your bad days come a little bit more frequently than that, Lee’s book will help you shine a new light on your life. Filled with thoughtful, simple and heart-opening exercises, plus snippets and stories from the author’s own struggles, this book will give you a new lens that will help you get through the rough patches, week-by-week, day-by-day or minute-by-minute if that’s all you can handle. Fill out these pages. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. And you’ll be blown away by what you discover about your own ability to feel happy. Or at least less sad.”— Bernadette Noll, author of Slow Family Living“A breath of fresh air...This is a wonderful tool for anyone struggling with depression—or even just feeling blah.”--Publishers Weekly

I purchased this book when I saw a review for it online and found the premise interesting. As someone who has ongoing struggles with anxiety and depression, I'm always up to try something new that might help. The book itself is basically an exercise book that allows you to move through at your own pace and fosters mindfulness which is something I think most of us toss aside when life gets busy or difficult. I've had some more clinical workbooks in the past and I think I actually prefer this less formal, more inviting format. One night as I was filling out one of the first exercises, my husband looked over and asked what I was doing. I told him I was listing 10 things that I do everyday that don't cause me pleasure and then crossing out the ones that are not essential. That ended up sparking a great conversation between the two of us that lasted quite a while and we both identified small things we could each change that would really have a positive impact on our day to day happiness.Even though I am using this as a tool to work through my mental health challenges, I think this book is a great option for anyone who feels in a rut or just wants to do a little soul searching. I'm looking forward to what other tools I'll discover in this little gem.

When I bought this book, I was in such a down mental state that I was pinning quite a bit of hope on its subtitle being possible. Now that I am looking back with clearer eyes, I see why this book is helpful. It gives you permission to identify your negative thoughts but steers you away from ruminating. It's a low risk high reward method of examining your thoughts and feelings. Doing basically any exercise on a page, regardless of its focus, tends to make me feel better in the moment. They are extremely practical exercises. Some of the exercises are just generally relaxing (like filling 50 squares with as many squares of gray as you can), others are more directive (like writing your most frequent intrusive thoughts, then identifying how they are distorted thinking). A lot of the advice and exercises seem to be simplified versions of methods used in mindfulness therapy and CBT. The way that it is introduced is non-threatening and fun.Personally, I don't actually write in this book but copy my prompts into a different notebook. That way I can reuse this book or lend it out to a friend who might need it.Another book which I would recommend buying in conjunction with this one is "Start Where You Are", which is apparently quite popular on Amazon. I feel that the content of these books goes hand in hand. Many of the exercises are similar in themes. However, that book is filled with cheery colors and lots of inspirational quotations; this book is inked in black and white, and might be better for someone who is depressed while stepping into self-examination with a journal for the first time.I recommend going slow and keeping an open mind if you choose to order it. I feel grateful for this book right now.

I found this when I was at that point of depression that sits just before "time to go to the hospital". The many books about helping, curing, or living with depression were just too much to contemplate. Besides living with anything was rapidly falling off the agenda. Here was a book with a goal I thought I could reach. Not only that, less sad was a hell of an improvement from where I was. It is filled with activilties that have helped other people. As it states, not all of them will work for you. Some of them might and one step up is better than staying put.If you are depressed, mildly, moderately, severly, or anywhere on the scale, get this book. Amazon ships it so you wont even have to leave the house. AND I BEG YOU BEFORE YOU DO SOMETHING PERMANENT, GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOOM OR CALL 911. Give those nice people a chance to come up with a better solution. Lets all live another day to kick depressions ass.

I bought this book for my pre-teen daughter who has a lot of negative thinking, obsessive compulsive disorder, and ADHD. I bribed her to read it because I knew it would be good for her. A few pages into the book she told me, "You don't have to pay me for reading an awesome book like this!"I purchased three more copies - one more for her when she finishes the first one, and a couple to pass out to give to my clients.Lee Crutchley does a great job of validating what it's like to be unhappy, and gives fun and meaningful activities to make small shifts in your attitude. Love it!!!

I really like this book. I think it is cute and it helps me get out of my head when I am feeling sad or out of control. It has some positive words of wisdom as well as some of the author's own experience with depression and how he recovered. It was nice to hear some of his personal story. As for the book, I like the prompts. There are a fair amount of drawing prompts, some writing prompts, some real world activities it asks you to do and reflect on.I also bought some other books you will likely see in the recommendations for this book. I bough "52 lists for happiness" and "Pick me up: A pep talk for now & later." You can see my full reviews on their individual product pages, but I wanted to make some brief comparisons. This book is meant to be filled out in a fairly linear manner, unlike "Pick me up." I liked being able to just flip to a random page and fill it out. "How to be happy" feels more like a journey I am meant to go on in a stepwise manner. Some people may prefer that structure so it is worth mentioning. "How to be happy" is the shortest book of the 3. It is about 2/3rds the size of the other two books I bought. It is also very heavy on drawing prompts. I am not terribly artistic so I found that to be frustrating. I prefer lists which is why the "52 lists for happiness" has ended up as my favorite. It is all in what you prefer and what gets you out of your head.
