About the Author
Daren S. Starnes is Master Teacher in Mathematics at the Lawrenceville School near Princeton, New Jersey, USA. He earned his M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. In 1997, he received a GTE GIFT Grant to integrate AP Statistics and AP Environmental Science. He was named a Tandy Technology Scholar in 1999. Daren has led numerous one-day and weeklong AP Statistics institutes for new and experienced AP teachers, and he has been a reader, table leader, and question leader for the AP Statistics exam. In 2001-2002, he served as coeditor of the Technology Tips column in the NCTM journal The Mathematics Teacher. In January 2004, Daren was appointed to a three-year term as a member of the ASA/NCTM Joint Committee on the Curriculum in Statistics and Probability. More recently, he served as Chair of the Western Regional Council of the College Board. Daren is also co-author of Statistics Through Applications, a popular textbook for non-AP high school statistics. Daniel S. Yates has taught Advanced Placement Statistics in the Electronic Classroom (a distance learning facility) affiliated with Henrico County Public Schools in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Prior to high school teaching, he was on the mathematics faculty at Virginia Tech and Randolph-Macon College. He has a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Florida State University. He has served as President of the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Viriginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Named a Tandy Technology Scholar in 1997, Dan is a 2000 recipient of the College Board/Siemens Foundation Advanced Placement Teaching Award. Although recently retired from classroom teaching, he stays in step with trends in teaching by frequently conducting College Board workshops for new and experienced AP Statistics teachers and by monitoring and participating in the AP Statistics electronic discussion group. Dan is co-author of Statistics Through Applications, a popular textbook for non-AP Statistics classes. David S. Moore is Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor of Statistics, Emeritus, at Purdue University, USA and was 1998 president of the American Statistical Association. He received his A.B. from Princeton and his Ph.D. from Cornell, both in mathematics. He has written many research papers in statistical theory and served on the editorial boards of several major journals. Professor Moore is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. He has served as program director for statistics and probability at the National Science Foundation. In recent years, Professor Moore has devoted his attention to the teaching of statistics. He was the content developer for the Annenberg/Corporation for Public Broadcasting college-level telecourse Against All Odds: Inside Statistics and for the series of video modules Statistics: Decisions through Data, intended to aid the teaching of statistics in schools. This book provides a good overview of human trafficking in the United States and is readable for the average person. Each chapter covers a specific form of trafficking through life story and then gives further explanation of the issues of trafficking ending with questions relevant to the information covered in the chapter. The book is clear, concise and easily read. We are using this book specifically for a church book read as an additional way to inform members of our parish about the issues of human trafficking in conjunction with an education program in our community and in partnership with 2 local HT organizations. Some books we considered were too disturbing for a large book read. The sad part of this effort is the more we educate and discuss in our parish, the more people are coming forward with personal experience and exposure to Human Trafficking in our suburban backyard. The only reason I rated this book a 4 rather than 5 is the questions at the end of each chapter are more like test questions with factual answers that can be found by reading the text as opposed to discussion questions that might get at the moral and responsive aspect of this horrific fact of our culture.

Heartbreaking, but something we ALL need to read. We need to grow our awareness of these issues, and spread the word.

I use this as part of the curriculum for a course I teach on human trafficking. My students find it helpful, as they prepare to serve as trauma recovery coaches to survivors. Thank you for this important work!

This book makes it clear that human trafficking is not just a problem overseas or only in our big cities but is pervasive throughout America. If you want to be better informed about trafficking, this is a good book to read.

It's easy to believe that human trafficking goes on in large cities and foreign countries. It's shocking to believe that it goes on in small towns all over the United States. But it does. And all of us are burying our heads in the sand if we try to ignore it. It's not just sex trafficking either. Modern day slavery is still happening even when we believe that Abraham Lincoln put an end to slavery. As long as there is a demand for ultra-cheap labor and prostitutes, we will have human trafficking. Nita Belles suggests that the pimps, johns and perpetrators be prosecuted instead of their victims. Makes sense to me. Like several others who have posted their reviews, I read this book because it was part of the United Methodist Women's reading program. I'm recommending it to all my FB friends.

Nita Belle has written an educational and informative book about the Human Trafficking issue that is occurring under out noses--"in our backyard". Her passion for those who have been enslaved by people who worship money and will go to any lengths to obtain it is obvious. When you see her in action, she is fearless in her need to offer help to those caught in this trap. I count myself lucky to have her as a friend and to be able to learn and share information in her company. Thank you Nita!!

About the Author

Susan Blakeley Klein is Associate Professor of Japanese Literature at the University of California, Irvine. In addition to Japanese theater, she specializes in premodern religion and literature. Her most recent book, Allegories of Desire: Esoteric Literary Commentaries of Medieval Japan (Harvard University Press, 2003) is on the medieval development of secret commentaries transmitted in esoteric poetry initiations. Her current research is on the influence of esoteric commentaries in Noh theater. For her next book project she plans to investigate the political, religious, and visual development of premodern Japanese ghosts.

I read this book just after returning from 12 years in Japan studying Butoh dance and Rinzai Zen.I was hoping this book would trigger my inspiration in how to articulate and explain this inexpressible art formIn a way which others can at least catch a glimpse of the transiency and beauty of Butoh.I was left disappointed because it became quite clear that words directly correlate with ones experience. Just as the great Zen Masters can write in a way that captures their clear mind. If someone only writes analytically from the point of view of an observer- than it's clear it's purely information and cannot touch the true heart of Butoh. That being said, this little book is, in a way, an homage to butoh and any/ all fingers pointing to this indefinable artform deserves a 'gassho'

This "college thesis" is a fully developed on work on the dancing phenomenon known as the Dance of Darkness. Klein is able to develop an obviously clear understanding of not only the subject but also the tone in which she is able to reconcile doing so while describing a dance that is outside the spectrum of rational thought and analysis. Butoh is a dance that seeks to return to the realities of the Premodern. It rejects any notion of clear understanding, discourse, standardization, subject, internality, and best of all, coherence. It is a dance that seeks to reconnect with not just nature, but a spiritual sense of existing or dwelling in which the external world (i.e.: western thought) is rendered irrelevent, and ultimately nonexistent. The dance, and the [anti]philosophy orient around the sublime, and dwell only in the sublime, and in that sublime lies the embrace of the darkness that exists in the spirit. The Darkness is grotesque, and the grotesque causes discomfort to those who are not connected to the premodern sense of dwelling/existence.Because the [anti]discourse of Butoh completely ignores any necessity for "training" or binary of inclusion/exclusion, Klein's non-participation in the dance does not preclude her from writing about it, and fully acknowledges the contradictory nature on writing a work about something that cannot and should not be written about. Her handling on the subject shows that she is attempting to maintain a sense of integrity in a dance that is already on the brink of being subsumed by the politics of The Spectacle in the realm of the Western Arts.
